Came here as a large group so we were in a private section. I thought the food was great and the owner was super kind. Go UCLA Anderson! Many food and drink options. I think this restaurant was a great way to sample different types of menu items. Located in a plaza area, it might be hard to find so be aware of that. Note that the restrooms are outside of the restaurant, but close by

Taste like home made Ayam Buah Keluak It's no secret that I love my Peranakan food. In fact, it's no secret that the GF and I both love the Peranakan culture. The food, the fashion, the wonderful world of Babas and traditional matriarchs , so it's no surprise that we're always on the lookout for the best Peranakan food, from Singapore to Malacca to Penang. Since the GF's family moved to Duxton, we've been walking by Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant at Chinatown Plaza and told ourselves that we will have to try it one day, and try we finally did. We ordered, to me, the 3 staples of any Peranakan restaurant. The Ayam Buah Keluak, the Babi Pongteh and the Nonya Chap Chye. Nonya Chap Chye Now this was a pretty good plate of chap chye. We've had a few varieties before, those that are undercooked, those that are over cooked, and while the cabbage in this version was on the soft side (which we love), it was a pretty tasty Chap Chye. I would however call this, the Nonya Chap Chye for beginners. While the dish was tasty, to me, it lacked that distinct flavour of the beancurd skin, the lily flower and the fermented soya bean. While there was a hint of it, it wasn't strong enough for me. The GF on the other hand loved it though as she's not a fan of Beancurd and Beancurd products. Babi Pongteh This is a dish that I really liked. Made again with fermented soya bean (yes yes, one of the favorite ingredients of the Peranakans) , this Babi Pongteh was a really tasty dish. The meat provided was pretty lean (which made me miss the home cooked version made with pork belly) However, the sauce was really really good and it came with a generous amount of Bamboo shoot. Ayam Buah Keluak Now this.. This was the highlight of my dinner. The Ayam Buah Keluak. Nothing says Peranakan more than Ayam Buah Keluak. I've been very blessed to have eaten some of the best home cooked Buah Keluak and I have to say that this is right up there with the best! More often than not, a lot of places tend to serve a watered down version of this dish but this sauce certainly packed all the right punches. It wasn't overly spicy and the sauce was filled with the fragrance from the spices and had the prominent flavour of the Buah Keluak (which again, a lot of restaurants lack). It was pretty generous with the Buah Keluak too, with 3 nuts provided in a serving. Only thing I hoped for was for the Buah Keluak to not be the "beginners" version, which the meat of the fruit is dug out, mixed with meat and re-stuffed back into its shell. Yes.. I like my Buah Keluak it all its mushy, bitter, black glory. Durian Pengat One of the better durian Pengat that we've had. Though not the strongest tasting, this durian Pengat leans more towards those who enjoy the bitter sweet durians. Overall, a very good way to end a yummy dinner. Just a quick note though. Don't be surprised if you discover the restaurant filled with Chinese national tour groups. The restaurant has now become a prominent food stop for tour groups looking to try pernanakan food.

A friend who was living oversea came home for a short visit and organized a perankan pig out session. We were looking for a venue that is accessible to everyone and came across this Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant located at Queens street. It was a friday evening and the restaurant was empty. In fact, our table of 10 was the only table that evening. Well, we decided to go for the ala carte buffet as it has a wide varieties to choose from. We enjoyed most of the dishes especially the Ayam Buah Keluak, Babi Pong Tay, Beef Rendang and Otah. However, the desserts were a tad disappoint. On the whole, dinner was pretty good and the service was good as we were the only ones there.
